Covid and it's consquences on climate change

The other day I came across an alarming article ( well not so alarming.. as it was a disaster in waiting always!):About 12 Indian cities are  at a risk of being submerged by the end of the century! Although I will definitely and hopefully,  not be alive to witness it..but the  very thoughts and images that are coming to my mind, in the event of such a catastrophe  has been churning my stomach.  So I wrapped my thoughts around this and started introspecting deeper into this ..( Since I had a lot of time on my hands, being under home isolation due to Covid..! Yes you heard it right... I got the big C Too! .. But my  bittersweet experiences with Covid warrant for an entire separate blog, which is in the making and will be published soon!)

But circling back to the bigger issue at hand of Climate change.. It is a known fact that our waste disposal mechanism and the emissions are a major contributor to global warming resulting in the ebbing of snow glaciers and rising temperatures! My train of thoughts... led me to believe that over the last year and a half, since the advent of the pandemic, which has jostled our lives completely out of gear, COVID has been a key factor to global warming as well!

COVID has propelled the use of PPE suits, rubber gloves, masks, face shields  and other related paraphernalia in a manner and extent like never before. How do we ensure that all of this non biodegradable hazardous waste  is disposed in the right manner.. ? Being in home quarantine for the last 10 days, I alone have used so many masks, tissues, sanitizer spray cans, etc.. all of which are packed in double garbage bags  sanitised and sprayed on the outside by me and marked hazardous waste and will be eventually left in the dumpster in our building separately (once i get out of my isolation) ... Now I can be rest assured that I have safely disposed off all the hazardous waste , with no exposure of contamination to others. RIGHT..?  WRONG..! Since my fears are not allayed by doing this alone. How can I ensure that  this waste most of which is plastic is being disposed off in the right and safe manner by the Municipal authorities and others in the chain of command of waste disposal management. And this is just my waste, imagine the numerous covid patients like me in home isolation and in hospitals .. the amount of waste each one of us might be generating... and to even imagine, the manner in which all of this hazardous waste might be getting disposed , albeit in all probability in  a very unhygienic and unhealthy manner, gets my stomach knotted!

Thus it is a vicious cycle.. as if we had a dearth of factors contributing to global warming... now adding to the already long list of reasons , indirectly is this COVID..!

So one way or another all of us are going to end up dead..  Sooner or later.. !

But since I never like to sign off my blog on sad note, the perpetual and compulsive optimist that I am... all I would like to  say it let us make the remainder of our lives on this planet safe, healthy and peaceful, by masking up, getting vaccinated, maintaining physical distance ( social distance is a misnomer if you ask me) from others, and try and limit our use of resources which may contribute to the looming gloom of climate change!!

#JanataCurfew and Life during Lockdown

To all my fellow Citizens in India and around the world,
The day of 22nd March will go down the annals of  Indian History, where the entire country adhered to a nationwide curfew in response to our prime minister's clarion call , in the wake of the Covid-19 Pandemic, which has jostled us out of our daily ever so hectic mundane activities.

The last time I witnessed such a curfew was during the communal riots in Bombay post the Babri Masjid demolition! But never before in my lifetime , a curfew of this magnitude and proportion!

On 22nd March, after  nearly two decades or maybe even more, as i stood in the balcony sipping milk at 10 am,  all I could hear was an eclectic chirping of birds, which was so mellifluous to the ears..! The leaves seemed greener.
Infact, being summer, the ghee which was in a liquid form until  a couple of days back had strangely solidified today,  maybe due to the drop in temperature .
When I started writing this post, I never imagined that this way of life would soon become what is being termed as "The New Normal"
So Like many other countries , grappling with COVID-19, went into a lockdown, so did ours starting from March 25th 2020.
Here is an account of some of my personal observations and experiences during the Lockdown:

1) It is so  ironic, that on regular days ( pre- lockdown) we were inhaling all the carbon dioxide and pollutants from the endless traffic, and now when the road is free of vehicles and traffic, and the air cleaner and purer we are having to use masks.
2)   What particularly piques my interest, is the over usage of some phrases such as " social distancing" "the new normal " " flattening the curve"  which have become an inherent part of our daily vocabulary!
3) Surprisingly, while promoting social distancing, what COVID-19 has also done, has bought people together virtually in more ways than one, while pulling them physically apart ( thanks to collaboration tools like zoom, hangouts, houseparty, teams and webex). Even people, who have not been in touch for ages , are suddenly sending out invites for virtual parties and the likes.. Well did it require a pandemic of this sort.. for people to keep in touch and stay connected ?( I for one, have always been a people's person and have always made a conscious effort to keep in touch with people , be it family or friends , in pre covid times too!!)
4) Instagram and all social media are being flooded with all the exotic dishes that  people cooked today and yesterday! Seems like everybody is making something around dalgona coffee ( Well cooking has never been my forte, and I thrive on basic and minimal cooking and salivate looking at these posts, making a note of them, so that when my cook  resumes work, she gets a long list of exotic dishes to cook)
5) Also all sorts of word puzzles, mathematical problems, are floating around whatsapp during these times, probably  to keep our brains from rusting.. (Well. our family( including the extended ) have always been quite adept and have always taken a keen interest in games, puzzles, brain teasers, which have been a regular feature during our family outings and family vacations , and solving sudoku, crosswords in the newspaper are among our daily rituals along with the morning filter coffee and  even now during our fortnightly family virtual calls)
6) Also there were posts on facebook stating that if we did not learn a new skill during lockdown shame on us.. ! Well I would say isn't staying safe and sane and alive good enough??
7) Another observation is: the innumerable conspiracy  theories doing the rounds , some of them almost sounding like plots straight out of some espionage thriller movie , about how china has unleashed this deadly virus (aka biological warfare) to gain an upper hand in the global economy , but sadly as newspaper articles cite, China is being dethroned as the preferred hub for manufacturing .

I have been writing this blog in bits and pieces over the last month or so, because never did any of us imagine when this all started out, that this is going to forever change the way we lead our lives ..!
The observations and lessons learnt are one too many, which would warrant a whole novel, but am sure many authors and wannabe writers would already have embarked upon writing such novels on the covid-19 and the massive impact it had on the year 2020, which would probably be best sellers during the next literature festival ( if and ever there is another one!)
Those of us who come out of this alive, (not trying to be pessimistic at all)  will have lots of stories to tell our future generations on how we survived this global pandemic.
Interestingly the other day,i saw a news piece which said a brother of one of the twins who had died during the Spanish Flu of 1918, succumbed to Covid -19 aged 100 years. Seems so diabolical that  twins were both victims of pandemics exactly a century apart.!!
Which also got me thinking on how the world would have tackled the spanish flu a century back , infecting nearly 500 million people,  which lasted over two years. Medical science was not as advanced in those days and also prevalence of  technology and means of communication would have been zilch. I shudder to even fathom how it would have been back then!
We should be thankful that at least in these trying times, we are able to stay connected with family friends and coworkers and able to carry on with our slightly deviated than normal lifes!
It can get stressful at times, working long hours, confined within the four walls of our houses, without social interactions of any sought ( since human beings are social animals) All of us may have our highs and lows and peaks of emotions, but the way I look at it, we are more fortunate than all of the following:

1) The frontline workers who are selflessly out there serving, risking their own lives, clad in the super suffocating PPE gears day in and day out (Read about a doctor who sleeps every night in his car to avoid risk of infecting his family members by going home)
2) The Numerous migrant workers, labourers , daily wage earners who are struggling to make ends meet and scampering to head back home or to work
3) The innumerable people who succumbed to COVID and had to die lonely deaths , and given mass funerals!
 4) And last but not the least our very valiant armed forces who have to safeguard our country's borders from perpetrators through rain and shine, and continue gracefully doing so in such trying times! ( Remember there is no such thing as work from home for our bravehearts!)

It aches my heart to see my city "that never sleeps" the city that I grew up in,
the city i call home ,and the city that I would go back to in a heartbeat.. Yess..Bombay, has been the most impacted.. in our country.!!(:

The tumultous effect that the COVID has had on all of our lives, across all socio economic borders , will take a really long time to get our lives back on track.
But resilient as we are ,and as our lives   slowly limp back to normalcy (with masks donned on our faces), this pandemic, I would say has inculcated discipline of some sort amongst the masses and many of us!
1) We have learnt to stand patiently in a queue outside grocery stores !
2) Hygiene which was on the backburner for most of the country's masses is coming to the fore!
3) We have  learnt to live with less, and make do with what we have , instead of hoarding!

As the positive  cases keep increasing by the day, sooner or later all of us would most probably contact the virus .. or maybe many of us may  already  be asymptomatic carriers , or another plausible reason could be that our bodies have developed an immunity to it..!
With fingers crossed, while we all await with bated breath for the scientists world over working relentlessly for a panacea for this virus, that has claimed an epic number of lives all across the globe.. LIFE GOES ON and HOPE LIVES...!

P.S. This blog is a tad too long , but so has been this lockdown !:)

Patience is indeed a virtue!

With every passing day, I have come to realize that the most important trait that we Indians lack is.. PATIENCE..!
Almost in every sphere of life, we lack patience.., while driving on the roads, people behind the wheels seldom have any consideration for pedestrians.. ! In other countries, pedestrians are given the right of way.. ! On the contrary, in ours might is right! Considering the fact,  that pavements are meant for pedestrians, the pathetic uneven condition of whatever is left of the pavements is definitely not amble friendly..! Besides pavements are in most places encroached upon by roadside vendors, tea stalls etc. To top it all , the absolutely restless and impatient two wheelers resort to riding on the pavement ..at times of traffic snarls..!  So where does that leave pedestrians..?  Can they just grow wings and fly???????????? The most annoying and displeasing manner in which people express their impatience is the constant honking..! Everybody is on a clockwork and  have a time and  a place to be at, and mind you  nobody is standing in the middle of the road, or not moving their vehicles for fun! But people keep blaring horns  as if the world is going to end.! So go easy on the honking, or rather avoid it completely.
A pedestrian walking will keep moving at a reasonable pace and there is no reason for us to alarm him/her by constantly honking!

HORN NOT OK PLEASE!

My Soccer fever!

Well  it is that time of the year, -the most awaited sporting event.. World Cup football.!
As always, my loyalties as far as football goes, has  been with the Germans, right from way back in the 1990 world Cup, which was when I got hooked on to soccer..!  The image of Germany's then captain, Lothar Mattheus, kissing the world cup is still clear in my mind. Lothar by the way has captained Germany in maximum no. of matches. Germany are also currently playing to defend their title of world champions, though their opening match  with Mexico was quite dismal..!

Let's wait and watch.. ! Until then keep the ball rolling!😉😉

Dances with the Wolves!

So don't get foxed by me blog title y'all!
The wolves I am referring to here are our newly elected cabinet ministers of the Karnatka state Govt!
The oldest minister is 82 years old and his qualification SSLC,,!!!!!!!!
Are you kidding me?Another minister who has taken oath is only an 8th grade pass!
Our democracy has truly become a mockery  of several sorts ..!
These are  the dimwits, we entrust with running the affairs of the state!
While engineering graduates who do not succeed in finding jobs, have to resort to becoming  sweepers in BBMP!
Ofcourse, I am all for dignity of labour, and I believe that no work is considered menial!
But look at the irony of how these power hungry and money enslaved , school, college dropouts end up becoming ministers!

My bone of contention is that when there is a retirement age and minimum qualification for most professions why should our ministers be exempt!
Well no one has the answer I guess as this debate has been going on for years and will never cease!

Partying on Thursdays!

So yesterday , which happened to be a Thursday  we went along with a few friends to the launch event of Bangalore's biggest watering hole and apparently Asia's biggest microbrewery.. BYG BREWSKY! ( A big Thanks and hug to Sudesh for inviting us too!)
After battling the Traffic for a good 45 minutes ( Bangalore's Notorious traffic), we finally reached the sprawling , oversized locale, which was  magnificently lit with psychedelic lights  and laser beams. The area was immensely vast with cascading levels almost like a fortress and the ambience was droolworthy.
We had a few drinks , a gin cocktail with kafir lime and an ample amount of food, which for once, I was not too interested in, mainly because I was enamoured by the ambience and the grooving to the music played by an excellent band! Unfortunately we wound up early next day being a working day.. but would definitely like to visit once again maybe on a relaxed saturday afternoon or night!
Two Thumbs up for BYG BREWSKY!

Rummy still rocks! Trust me!

After a hiatus of almost 8 years, I have resorted to blogging yet again..! I guess the move to Bangalore in 2009 has made  balancing work life and social life for me a bit too dicey!
Well, the last few years have been as usual full of highs and lows..! Due credit to my getting back to blogging goes to my becoming a part of the Toastmaster's club over 6 months back.. It has unearthed some dormant skills in me and I have decided to hone my writing skills by way of blogging..!
The upside of this is that I have also started catching up on my reading which I have been wanting to do for the longest time! So welcome to my world whereby I will try and discuss my personal experiences, social causes, travelogues, LGBT rights, Fiasco of UID, , the FIFA World Cup , well just about anything under the sun..! So grab your tub of popcorn and read on!
